How To Become A MAC Cosmetics Make up Artist

by Guest Author on September 1, 2009

MAC cosmetics, the initials stand for Make-up Art Cosmetics, are probably the most famous and widely used cosmetics in the world. They were founded by Frank Toskan a make-up artist and Frank Angelo the owner of a hair salon chain. They were both involved in fashion photography and were looking for cosmetics products to meet their needs. They couldn’t and so started their own line. The rest as they say is history. That was in 1984 and today every one who has an interest in make-up wants to be a trained MAC Cosmetics Artist. And MAC offers advanced classes for professional artists. However they have nothing for the aspiring artist who is just starting out. This article is for the aspiring artist. It will tell you what to do. You will learn how to build a portfolio, get experience and put yourself in a position to take those advanced classes.

Creating A Portfolio

You need a photographer, a stylist and a videographer. The easiest way to find them is through the local fashion and art schools. Offer to work with students and help them to build their portfolio. You can also put ads in free places such as Craig’s List. You can approach a hair salon and offer to work with a couple of their clients for free as long as you can take pictures. Don’t forget to offer them copies of the pictures. Hey it never hurts to ask your Mother or your friends if they know an aspiring photographer or videographer. And by the way you need the videographer to capture you doing the makeup and talking about what you’re doing. Eventually you will be submitting your reel.

Work With Everyone

Here’s a short list of where to find clients” Hand out flyers at local malls. Team up with bridal shops. Work with bands on their stage makeup and publicity stills. Modeling schools and agencies. Department stores and boutiques. Often they demonstrate cosmetics or put on fashion shows.

Your Team

Always take your team with you. Get pictures, and video of everyone you do. Don’t forget to include a narration of why you are doing it.

Portfolio

Finally you will have built a portfolio. It is known as your book. It will include 9 x 12 or 11 x 14 photos.

MAC Submission

MAC requires your portfolio, a resume, and edited video reel. Check out www.macpro.com for more information. When you go to the site type “employment” in the search box and you will get their latest information.
