I’m starting a new job tomorrow, selling gym memberships. I do have sales experience, but not like this. I will have to build my own pipeline of customers, all my contacts will be up to ME. I’m pretty outgoing, and have no problem talking to anyone. But im not really good at randomly walking up to a person and trying to sell something. I look really young(about 16 im told) although im in my mid twenties, and i’m afraid i won’t be taken seriously. I’ve been a stay at home mom for a couple years and don’t know many people, so i have to start from scratch. Any tips on how to build my list of contacts, and/or in what manner to approach someone, or appeal to someone without looking like a freak?
I started out the same way many years ago! I had a great peer to learn from and I did what he said! It works.
Building your pipeline = at least 10 new in person visits to big business in your area because it’s a one stop shop to market your gym memberships: make them feel special by offering a "for them only" membership! Now out of your pocket you may have to come up with a gimmick…tees, bags, something special to make them feel special. Make 10 new contacts a day! Go out and meet them find out who is the best to get the word out. Leave your info : make flyers! for cubbies…or to leave in the break rooms…
Follow up w/ your new 10 on a schedule use outlook if you have it to set reminders to call back or go visit. Make every effort to visit often the more they see your face…the more they’ll think about what you have to offer…
And it is all about who ya know so start also w/ you local "sphere of influence" everyone…and make them feel speical> tell them they’ll get a goody (tee shirt) if they refer you someone or sign up themselves…etc..and continue to always offer these special people incentive to send you referals.
Get in with the Chamber of Commerce go to the after hours events, network with the other members…
If you are proud of your GYM and services they offer and represent them in that way you’ll never look like a freak. Dress professional always.
Some of the best big source of people who are making money right now: Car Dealerships the bigger the better! Especially Toyota! Go there first! Those guys and girls are all about looks when they sell as well so they need to look good right? That’s really where you should be probably if you want to make big money in sales at your age! I encourage you to persue that as well. That’s a whole other story but as a female who feels she fearless in sales you would fit right in and move up in the car business. (it’s not as slimey as you may think) (just think 50k-120k) easy.
Hosptials, Dr Offices, Food and Beverage, the list goes on…just pick a location close to you and work out from there: will save on gas too. 10 new businesses a day 5 days a week or more! Get to know your radio people too they love do to promotions…maybe you can get in on one.
Don’t forget to keep track of all your expenses you can deduct from your taxes.
